In the summer of 1944, 12-year-old Billy Crawford traveled from his home in New York City to Fontainebleau, France, to find his grandfather's war medals. Billy's grandfather, John Crawford, had fought in the Battle of the Bulge and had been awarded the Silver Star for his bravery. But after the war, John had lost his medals, and Billy was determined to find them.

Billy arrived in Fontainebleau by train, and he was immediately struck by the beauty of the town. The streets were lined with trees, and the buildings were made of stone. Billy had never seen anything like it before.

Billy began his search for his grandfather's medals by visiting the local museum. He showed the museum curator a picture of his grandfather, and the curator was able to tell him that John Crawford had been a member of the 101st Airborne Division. The curator also told Billy that the 101st had fought in the Battle of the Bulge at a place called Bastogne.

Billy decided to travel to Bastogne to see if he could find his grandfather's medals there. He took a bus to Bastogne, and when he arrived, he went to the local library. He showed the librarian a picture of his grandfather, and the librarian was able to tell him that John Crawford had been awarded the Silver Star for his actions at Bastogne.

The librarian also told Billy that there was a monument in Bastogne to the men of the 101st Airborne Division. Billy decided to visit the monument, and when he arrived, he saw a plaque with his grandfather's name on it. Billy was so happy to finally find his grandfather's medals, and he knew that he would always treasure them.

In addition to finding his grandfather's medals, Billy also learned a lot about French culture and history during his trip. He visited the Palace of Fontainebleau, which was once the home of the French kings. He also visited the American Cemetery at Omaha Beach, where he learned about the D-Day landings. Billy was so impressed by the courage of the men who fought in World War II, and he was proud of his grandfather for his service.

When Billy returned home to New York City, he was a changed boy. He had learned about the importance of history and the value of courage. He had also made new friends in France, and he knew that he would always cherish the memories of his trip.

Epilogue

Billy Crawford went on to become a successful businessman. He never forgot his trip to Fontainebleau, and he often told his children and grandchildren about the adventures he had there. Billy's story is a reminder that even the smallest of us can make a difference in the world.
