Early Life and Education

George Washington was born on February 22, 1732, at Pope's Creek Plantation in Westmoreland County, Virginia. He was the eldest of six children born to Augustine Washington and Mary Ball Washington. His father was a wealthy planter and tobacco farmer, and his mother was a devout Christian. Washington received a classical education at home, and he also studied surveying. He became a surveyor in 1749, and he worked for several years in the Shenandoah Valley.

Military Career

In 1754, the French and Indian War broke out. Washington was appointed a lieutenant colonel in the Virginia Regiment, and he fought in several battles against the French and their Native American allies. In 1755, he was defeated at the Battle of Fort Necessity, but he gained valuable experience. In 1758, he led a successful expedition against Fort Duquesne, which helped to secure the Ohio Valley for the British. Washington resigned from the military in 1759, and he returned to his plantation at Mount Vernon.

Revolutionary War

In 1775, the American Revolutionary War broke out. Washington was appointed commander-in-chief of the Continental Army. He led the Continental Army to victory in several battles, including the Battle of Trenton and the Battle of Yorktown. In 1781, Washington resigned from the military, and he returned to Mount Vernon.

Presidency

In 1789, Washington was elected the first President of the United States. He served two terms as President, and he helped to establish the new nation. He signed the Bill of Rights into law, and he also established the first national bank. Washington retired from public life in 1797, and he returned to Mount Vernon. He died on December 14, 1799, at the age of 67.

Legacy

George Washington is considered one of the most important figures in American history. He was a courageous leader who helped to secure the independence of the United States. He was also a wise and compassionate man who helped to establish the new nation. Washington's legacy continues to inspire Americans today.
