Hassam was born in Dorchester, Massachusetts, and studied art at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston. He later traveled to Europe, where he was influenced by the work of the Impressionists. In 1889, he returned to the United States and settled in New York City, where he became a leading member of the American Impressionist movement.
